Anglian Water said supplies had been restored to customers after the pipe ruptured on Dereham Road in Norwich on Thursday afternoon.
But the westbound lane remained closed for repairs between the roundabout by Sweet Briar Road and the former Gate House pub.
The route is a key link between the city centre and the A47.
An Anglian Water statement said: "Following a burst main on Dereham Road, we've been able to restore the water supply to everyone who was affected.
"We now need to come back and make a permanent repair."
A spokesperson said repair work was expected to be finished by next week.
