Two people have died in a crash where a car came off the road and ended up on a petrol station forecourt on the opposite side of the carriageway.

Police said both people in the Ford Ka - a man and a woman - were pronounced dead at the scene, on the A167 at Ferryhill, County Durham, despite treatment from officers and paramedics.

It happened at about 01:40 GMT, with the vehicle thought to have been travelling from the town of Chilton towards the hamlet of Thinford, east of Spennymoor.

The victims' families were being supported by specialist officers, Durham Police said.
