A man has died after being pulled from the sea off County Donegal in the Republic of Ireland.

The man, aged in his 60s, got into difficulty in the water at Marameelan - south of Dunloe in the west of the county - shortly before 20:00 on Monday, gardaí (Irish police) said.

Irish broadcaster RTÉ News has reported that the man fell into the sea after fishing from rocks.

The man was removed from the water by the coastguard and taken to Letterkenny University Hospital and was pronounced dead a short time later.

'Tragic incident'

A police officer told RTÉ's Irish language radio programme Barrscéalta on Tuesday that this was a "tragic incident".

She urged people to take heed of water safety advice and passed on her condolences to the deceased man's family at this time.

Arrangements will now be made for a post-mortem examination and the local coroner has also been notified.
