The appointment of a deputy police and crime commissioner (PCC) for Nottinghamshire has been postponed while "checks and due diligence" are carried out.

Angela Kandola was due to be confirmed in the role at a meeting on Tuesday.

Police and crime commissioner Gary Godden apologised to members of the Nottinghamshire Police and Crime Panel for the delay.

"Unfortunately I have some checks and due diligence relevant to the appointment still to do," he said.

Labour's Mr Godden, who was elected in May, requested a postponement "until those checks and due diligence have been completed and I am satisfied with them".

Ms Kandola, who currently represents the Berridge ward on Nottingham City Council, was not present for the meeting.

The BBC has attempted to contact her for comment.

Christine Goldstraw, independent chair of the police and crime panel, said it was "unfortunate" panel members had not been informed until they arrived for the meeting but "occasionally these things come at you from left-field".

The meeting was brought to a close after seven minutes.

Conservative councillor and panel member Boyd Elliott told the BBC he was unhappy about the timing.

"It was a complete and utter waste of my time. There are important things in my village I could've been doing," he said.

Ms Kandola has been recommended by Mr Godden for the £62,000-per-year role.

Documents presented to the panel say she has over 25 years' experience working across a range of issues, including tackling violence against women and girls.

Previous police and crime commissioner, Conservative Caroline Henry, did not appoint a deputy, saying she wanted to use the money on front-line policing instead.

Mr Godden declined the BBC's request for an interview.
