A murder investigation has been launched into the death of a 23-year-old man who was found with stab wounds in Newcastle.

Northumbria Police received reports that a man had been assaulted on Cartmel Green, in Slatyford, at 23:42 GMT on Wednesday.

Paramedics treated the victim but he died at the scene.

A 24-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and a 49-year-old woman and a 24-year-old man have been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.

Det Supt Sean McGuigan said: “A young man has sadly lost his life and our thoughts remain with his family at this devastating time.

“An investigation has been launched and a number of officers are working hard to establish exactly what has happened in the moments leading up to this tragic incident."

Det Supt McGuigan added the force believes those involved know each other and that there is no wider risk to the public.

Police officers remain at the scene and are carrying out additional patrols in the area.
