A man's body has been pulled from a lake on Merseyside, with police working to confirm his identity.

Emergency services were called to Marine Lake by the Promenade in Southport at about 18.45 BST.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, Merseyside police said.

The force said an investigation had begun and asked people to avoid the area.

A statement said: "Emergency services were contacted following reports that the body of a man had been discovered in the lake.

"The man was removed and he was sadly pronounced deceased at the scene.

"Enquiries are ongoing to identify the man and notify his next of kin. The area around the lake is currently cordoned off and we ask people to avoid the area."
