A seaside carnival has been cancelled due to bad weather being forecast.

Mablethorpe Carnival was due to take place on Saturday.

Carl Richardson, chair of Mablethorpe Carnival and community events, said, with "great regret", organisers "had no choice" but to follow national guidance and cancel this year's event due to high winds and rain being forecast at the weekend.

The Bathing Beauties Craft Festival will also not take place.

Mr Richardson says the event will be back next year "bigger and brighter, weather permitting"

Mablethorpe Carnival is believed to have started before World War Two and was revived 16 years ago.

Mr Richardson said: "We have considered postponing it to another weekend, but the next three weeks' weather forecast is not favourable either."

He said the decision to cancel was not "reached lightly" and organisers were "absolutely devastated" as it had taken volunteers "several hundred hours" to organise this year's event.

"We truly believe that to cancel this year is the safest and right to thing to do, even though we will lose money," he said.

Mr Richardson said organisers were contacting those due to take part and would issue refunds where appropriate.

He added the event would be back next year "bigger and brighter, weather permitting".
