Two men have appeared in court in connection with violent unrest in Bristol.

Mark Bowen, 40, of no fixed address, and Daniel Russell, 47, of Church Road in Redfield, Bristol, have been charged with violent disorder.

They were told to next appear at Bristol Crown Court on 14 August.

Five men in total have now been charged after violent disorder in the city centre broke out on Saturday.

Hundreds of far-right protesters and a counter-protest group gathered for two demonstrations near Castle Park.

Tensions have been high across England after the killing of three young girls in Southport, Merseyside, on 29 July.

False claims were spread online that the person responsible was an asylum seeker who had arrived in the UK by boat.

A total of 20 arrests have now been made in connection with Saturday's events.

Bristol's Supt Mark Runacres called the unrest "shameful", adding the force would not facilitate "acts of criminality".

On Wednesday, thousands of anti-racist demonstrators gathered in Old Market after it was rumoured an immigration lawyer's premises would be targeted by far-right protesters.

Crowds were praised by police for "displaying exemplary behaviour".
