A man has been taken to hospital after he was struck on the head by what police are calling "a glass bottle containing a lit rag".

Hertfordshire Police said officers were called to Fairlands Way, Stevenage, at 00:09 BST and spoke to the victim, who had a cut to his head. Burn marks were visible on a section of pavement.

He was taken to the Lister Hospital in the town, for treatment, the force said.

"I know that this incident will concern people living locally, but I would like to reassure the community that this was a contained incident," said Ch Insp Sarah Gilbertson of Hertfordshire Police.
