Calls to introduce more 20mph zones in a town centre in Shropshire are to be considered by councillors

The speed limiting is part of a plan for Oswestry by Oswestry Town Council proposed by Green Party councillor Olly Rose to promote greater safety where people live and shop.

Parts of the town centre - including Church Street, Cross Street and part of Willow Street - became 20mph zones in 2021 as part of changes to the one-way system.

Unveiling the plan, Ms Rose said cutting the speed limit would help reduce road deaths and injuries.

Some 20mph zones had been introduced outside schools and in the town centre, but she said the approach had not been consistent.

“Children need to be safe on their whole route to and from school, not just outside of the school gate,” she said.

Ms Rose added that the town council had previously made two motions in favour of 20mph speed restrictions in residential areas of the town.

Her motion will be discussed at a meeting of the council on Wednesday.
