A multi-million pound scheme aimed at making one of Wiltshire’s busiest roads safer continues next month.

Temporary traffic lights will be in place for three weeks on Calne Road in Lyneham from 14 October while an outdated pedestrian crossing is upgraded.

The work forms part of the A3102 Safer Road Scheme launched by Wiltshire Council last year.

It covers the 20-mile stretch from junction 16 of the M4 near Royal Wootton Bassett to the A350 in Melksham.

Wiltshire Council said the planned £7m improvements will cut the number of serious incidents on a route deemed high-risk by the Road Safety Foundation (RSF).

Signage, road markings and crossing points will be revamped, while some junctions are set to be remodelled.

Wiltshire Council leader Richard Clewer said: “This crossing has come to the end of its designed life, so we’re taking this opportunity to upgrade it to a puffin crossing.

“A key priority set out in our business plan is to have well-connected and safe communities and these upgrades will ensure residents can cross safely in Lyneham.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused by this work, but this crossing needs to be upgraded.”

Footways adjacent to the Co-op supermarket in Lyneham will be improved as part of the latest work.
