A police force's historic former headquarters is going up for sale.

Canning Place in Liverpool city centre served as Merseyside Police's landmark station for more than 40 years, first opening its doors in 1977.

The 2.64-acre site, situated next to Liverpool ONE shopping centre and opposite the Albert Dock, is now up for sale.

Merseyside's Police and Crime Commissioner, Emily Spurrell said the sale was a "key step" in a 12-year plan, external to modernise and update the region's police stations.

Described as "the best regeneration opportunity in the entire country", Canning Place encompasses the former seven floor station, an annex, car park and a gatehouse.

Merseyside Police began the process of vacating and relocating to Rose Hill, off St Anne Street, in October 2021.

Ms Spurrell said the move to the new headquarters which officially opened in March 2022, was saving the organisation approximately £550,000 each year.

She said Canning Place, up for sale with consultancy and construction firm Mace Consult Ltd and commercial property estate agents Colliers, occupies a "prime location" along Liverpool's skyline.

"Our iconic waterfront boasting the Three Graces and the Royal Albert Dock and Kings Dock is known and loved by people across the region, the country and indeed the world," she added.

"We want this pivotal plot of land to be used for a bold, ambitious, high-quality development which will enhance the city's vibrant spirit, attract visitors and businesses, and benefit local people."

A public consultation was held earlier this year to find out how the public and stakeholders would like the land developed.

The results of the consultation is being used to advertise the site and guide potential bidder who need to apply by 24 October.
