A woman has died after a shooting in Talbot Green in Rhondda Cynon Taf.

South Wales Police were called to the Green Park area of the town at about 18:10 GMT on Sunday.

The force confirmed a 40-year-old woman was found with serious injuries and died at the scene.

A 42-year-old man from Talbot Green has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is in police custody.

A number of crime scenes have been set up in the area as inquiries continue.

Road closures remain in place as officers gather evidence.

Det Ch Insp James Morris said: "I understand the concern this will cause the local community, and I want to reassure people that a team of experienced detectives are already working at pace to piece together the events of last night."

Local residents said there has been a significant response from the emergency services, with police vehicles heading to the area at speed with their blue lights on.

A police helicopter arrived over Talbot Green - a town 10 miles north-west of Cardiff - at 18:30 on Sunday and circled the area before later returning to base in St Athan.

Residents have expressed their shock at the incident on social media.

Local councillor Sarah Jane Davies said recent events in the area had caused "concern and alarm in the community".
