A man has been found with serious injuries after reports that a horse and cart were on the loose in a High Street.

Essex Police were called to Dedham, near Colchester, at about 12:00 BST on Tuesday after receiving reports of an out-of-control animal from members of the public.

The man who had been driving the horse and cart was found about a mile away on Ardleigh Road at its junction with Long Road West.

He was taken to hospital, but his injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.

Police said the horse was secured by a member of the public.

A force spokesperson said: "We are appealing to anyone who was in the area and saw anything related to this incident to get in touch.

"We do not know how the rider came off the cart at this stage and we are looking into the circumstances which led up to the incident."
