People caught dropping rubbish outside a hospital could be fined £150.

From Wednesday, fixed penalty notices will be given for littering around the perimeter of Hull Royal Infirmary, including dropping cigarette butts.

Hull City Council said the measures were part of a new Public Spaces Protection Order to combat anti-social behaviour outside the hospital.

Councillor Charles Quinn, portfolio holder for environment, said the aim was to "create a clean and safe environment".

He added: "Littering outside the hospital is not only unsightly but deeply disrespectful to those receiving care and the dedicated staff working tirelessly to provide it."

"By introducing fines, we're making it clear that this behaviour is unacceptable and will not be tolerated."

Dana Schofield says people who drop litter lack respect

Dana Schofield, 31, said he thought it's a "fantastic" idea.

"Littering is terrible. We have one planet, people have no respect.

"I think littering is a problem everywhere."

Paul Anderson, 65, also agreed with the fixed penalty notices and said litter was a problem outside the hospital.

However, he did not think it would prevent people from littering. He added: "I don't think it will stop it... not at all."
