Police will have extra powers to deal with anti-social behaviour during a popular firework show that attracts thousands of people.

The Carlisle fire show is to be held in the city's Bitts Park on Saturday, with a bonfire, firework display and music.

Cumbria Police said it had secured a dispersal order for the day, meaning anyone causing trouble will be asked to leave the area and be arrested if they return.

"Unfortunately, in previous years, we have had incidents of anti-social behaviour in the city centre," said Insp Andy Leather.

He said there would be increased patrols to ensure "everyone has a safe and enjoyable night".

"Anyone who is issued a dispersal order will get a visit from officers at home," he added.

Cumberland Council, which is organising the event, said it expected 35,000 people to attend.

During the day, the authority is also holding the food festival Taste Cumbria in the cathedral grounds, with live music on Greenmarket.
