The family of a man who died four days after being seriously assaulted in a town centre said he "will be so missed".

Jeffrey Burton, 50, was attacked in London Road, Kettering, between midnight and 04:00 BST on 27 August, police said.

He died in the early hours of Sunday at Kettering General Hospital, prompting a murder investigation. A post-mortem showed he died as a result of a head injury, but further medical tests are still pending.

A 34-year-old man from Kettering has been arrested on suspicion of murder and has been conditionally bailed. Three women and four men arrested on suspicion of murder have been released on bail.

Mr Burton's family said: "Jeffrey was a painter and decorator by trade, but he would turn his hand to anything if asked to help. He was quite a cheeky chap really, but no matter where his life led him, he was always so close to his mum."

The attack took place between Market Street and St Peter's Avenue, according to police.

The seven people previously arrested on suspicion of attempted murder were three women from Kettering, aged 45, 40 and 23, three men from Kettering, aged 60, 55 and 31 and a man from Corby, aged 34.

Officers are continuing to appeal for witnesses or anyone with information to contact them on 101.
