An arrest has been made after a man reportedly assaulted a woman then dragged her onto a motorway.

Gloucestershire Police said a member of the public called in after they saw the woman walking along the hard shoulder of the southbound carriageway of the M5 near Junction 8 for Strenham Services.

Officers found the woman, who told them a man had punched and dragged her into the motorway lanes before smashing the wing mirrors of her car which was parked on the hard shoulder.

The woman sustained only minor injuries in the incident, which happened at about 03:00 BST on 5 August, but was left "shaken", the force said.

A man in his 50s from Evesham was arrested on suspicion of common assault and later released on bail.

Investigating officers would like anyone who saw what happened to make contact, especially the driver of a white van who turned up at the scene and took the woman home before coming back and collecting her car.
