A section of the A27 in East Sussex was shut following a fatal crash.

Sussex Police said at about 03:30 BST on Saturday emergency services were called to the A27, near the Esso Garage between Falmer and Lewes, to a report of a crash involving a pedestrian and a vehicle on the westbound carriageway.

The 44-year-old male pedestrian, from Tunbridge Wells in Kent, was confirmed dead and an investigation was launched to establish the circumstances of the incident, police added.

The road had been shut in both directions, with the eastbound carriageway reopening at about 07:00 and the closure on the westbound road being lifted at about 15:45.

Sussex Police is asking anyone with information to contact them.

South East Coast Ambulance Service has been contacted for more information.
