Policeman kneed in groin after Peterborough traffic stop

  • Published

The moment a policeman was kneed in the groin "out of nowhere" following a routine traffic stop was caught on bodycam.

Officers spotted a large amount of cash in a car pulled over on Eastern Avenue, Peterborough on 5 April and searched its two occupants, believing they were concealing items in their trousers.

The 16-year-old passenger struck the policeman's groin after being told he would be strip-searched at the station - an attack described by the officer as "a cheap shot".

The teenager later pleaded guilty to possession with intent to supply heroin and crack cocaine, possession of a knife and assaulting an emergency worker.

He was sentenced to an 18-month youth referral order, which includes a curfew and other supervision requirements.

Det Con Dylan Lenton said: "The assault on the officer came out of nowhere, with the boy being completely calm and waiting to be taken into custody for a further search.

"To be involved in this type of criminality at such a young age, and to then assault a police officer and show no remorse or regard for his actions is worrying. He will now be closely monitored and given the opportunity to change his life around, which I sincerely hope he does."
