A car showroom in St Martin is set to become an Iceland food store, which will operate between 07:00 and 21:00 from Mondays to Sundays.

Planning permission has been granted by the development and planning authority for the ground floor Motor Mall car showroom to be turned into the food store, following the change of use application.

The building is part of the St Martin's Business Park, where other stores include a petrol station, tyre shop and clothes stores, and there is already parking space for more than 100 vehicles, according to a planning department report.

The plans also include an extra six accessible parking bays with 20 spaces to park bikes.

The application said the store would sell the daily essentials and would "sustain" demand at the local centre.

The state's traffic and highway service suggested that designated pedestrian walkways and crossings could be created at the site.

It added there is also likely to be an increase in pedestrian movements to and from the site in La Grande Rue.

The planning permission remains for three years.
