A 23-year-old youth worker from Lochinver has taken on the role of championing the causes of young people in the Highlands.

Highland Council's youth convener role is a full-time position that runs for a year and is designed to give the local authority a closer link with young people in the area.

Leah McBain, who previously worked with Highland Council's youth service, is the 17th young person to take up the job.

She has been appointed to work closely with young people across the region through the Highland Youth Parliament, area youth forums and pupil councils in secondary schools.

Ms McBain has taken over the role from Lauren McKittrick, from Inverness.

Ms McBain said her mission was to ensure that the young people she worked with felt confident and supported in pursuing their own opportunities.

She said: "Young people are the future, and we must do more to support and uplift them."

Ms McBain said she planned to boost her own skills through online courses, including psychology, disability awareness and British Sign Language, to help her in the new role.
