A section of motorway through Leicestershire is set to shut for three weekends for “essential” roadworks.

The M69 will be closed southbound by National Highways from the M1 at Leicester to Junction 1 where the motorway crosses the A5 at Stretton Baskerville south of Hinckley.

The first weekend closure runs from Friday to Monday, with a second planned from Friday 30 August to Monday 2 September, and a further date in September yet to be confirmed.

While the carriageway is closed, resurfacing will be carried out, including sections of the hard shoulder.

White lines and road studs will also be refreshed as part of the programme of work which began in July and is set to continue until mid-October.

Traffic will be diverted while the closures are in place.

Arriva said during the closures the X6 service towards Coventry will divert through Narborough, Sapcote and Sharnford to the M69, and passengers should allow extra time for their journeys.

The roadworks follow safety barrier works and vegetation works carried out by National Highways along the Leicestershire section of the M69 from April until July.
