Plan to cut speed limit on main approach to town

Reducing the speed limit would cut accidents and improve safety, say council officials

Councillors are being asked to approve a reduction in the speed limit on a main road in Lincolnshire.

Officials at North Lincolnshire Council have recommended that the limit should be set at 50mph (80km/h) at Mortal Ash Hill on the A18 approach into Scunthorpe. Currently, the national speed limit applies.

About 25,000 journeys are made on the road every day, and reducing the speed limit would cut accidents and improve safety, the authority said.

If approved, the reduced limit would apply from the Forest Pines roundabout to the steelworks' Gate A roundabout. The council is consulting with residents to get feedback.

Councillor Tim Mitchell, cabinet member for connectivity, said: "This decision has come about following discussions with our partners at Humberside Police and Safer Roads Humber.

"Mortal Ash Hill is one of our main arteries and we need to ensure travelling along it is as safe and smooth as possible.

"This reduction in speed will not only protect motorists, but also reduce emissions in the area."

Comments about the proposed plan should be sent to the council's Traffic Safety Team before 2 January 2025.
