Councillors have approved a reduction in the speed limit on a main road in Lincolnshire.

Lincolnshire County Council's planning and regulation committee ruled the limit should be reduced from 60mph (96km/h) to 50mph (80km/h) along a stretch of the A52 at Donington, near Spalding.

Ward councillor Jane King told a meeting on Monday that there had been a number of minor accidents.

She said the parish council would have preferred the limit to be reduced to 40mph (64km/h), but acknowledged police had considered 50mph "more realistic".

King told the meeting that footfall in the village had increased since the opening of a Co-op store.

"We have got people with buggies and small kids, along with older people who have to wait until the road is completely clear, and sometimes it can take a while," she said.

Councillor Tom Smith felt the limit should remain at 60mph, adding the change would be difficult to enforce over the 984ft (300m) stretch, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

However, Councillor Charlotte Vernon said the 50mph limit was a "suitable compromise".
