The community science project aims to collect long-term seawater information across Alderney

An Alderney wildlife charity is launching a survey to monitor the long-term health of seawater around the island.

The Alderney Wildlife Trust's (AWT) citizen science project has been created with a grant from Sea-Changers, a UK based marine charity.

The £1,800 funding has been used to buy equipment which members of the community could use to measure things like sea surface temperature, water pH and salinity.

The charity said seawater chemistry played an important role in the health and distribution of sea creatures and habitats.

Long-term monitoring could help identify natural trends and the influence of climate change.

AWT said involving the community helped promote marine life and assisted the public in understanding the issues facing marine environments.

The first public survey will record the seawater at Corblets, Arch and Saye bays from June.
