Odeon has confirmed that it will open a new eight-screen cinema in Peterborough this year.

The venue at the Queensgate Shopping Centre would be the operator's first location in Cambridgeshire.

Independent chain Empire was previously chosen as the operator but the firm went into administration.

The Odeon group said it was "delighted" to make its debut in the county.

The cinema would have cutting-edge sound technology and would cover 25,000 sq ft (2,323 sq m).

About 40 jobs would also be created and the cinema screens would include IMAX technology, a spokesperson said.

Suzie Welch, managing director at Odeon UKI, said: “We are delighted to be making our regional debut in Peterborough and form a key part of Queensgate’s brand new leisure space.

"We are looking forward to delivering an unmatched cinema experience for visitors and creating memorable experiences, complemented by our fantastic array of food and beverage options in the cinema.”
