Diesel spill road works finish ahead of schedule

A road has reopened ahead of schedule following resurfacing works because of a "significant" diesel spillage.

The A22 Caterham bypass closed on Sunday night, with diversions in place and traffic delays in the area.

It reopened at about 16:00 BST on Wednesday, ahead of the predicted finish time of Thursday at 12:00.

Surrey Highways said staff had worked through the night and in heavy rain to remove 4,600 square metres of contaminated surface area and relay the road.

The road had been closed between Wapses Lodge roundabout to junction six with of the M25.

During the closure Surrey Police asked drivers to avoid the area after the "significant" fuel spillage.

On social media, external, Surrey Highways thanked businesses, a local school and residents for their patience during the works.
