The opening date for Crewe's new bus station has been confirmed.

The building work has taken two years, but will give the town a modern, safer bus station when it opens on 7 May, said Cheshire East Council.

The new station has public toilets, which the old one did not, has a fully enclosed passenger waiting area and is also covered by CCTV.

Existing bus services will stop operating from the temporary bus station at 20:00 BST on Saturday in readiness for the changeover, said the council.

Buses will instead pick up and drop off from nearby Prince Albert Street.

"Crewe is known for its fantastic transport links, and those travelling by bus can now enjoy a much more welcoming arrival into the town centre," said Councillor Michael Gorman, who acknowledged that people had been calling for a new bus station for "some time."

It will have its official opening once the new town centre multi-storey car park is open, which is expected to be by the end of May.
