Father and son convicted over murder plot

A father and son have been found guilty of conspiracy to murder.

West Midlands Police said Mohammed Aslam, 56, and Mohammed Nazir, 30, from Elms Avenue in Derby, planned to kill the owner of a Birmingham clothing shop after a dispute in 2018 which left the pair injured.

The force said the owner had driven home to South Yardley, Birmingham, in September 2019 and was threatened with a gun as he got out of his car.

But he escaped after the weapon jammed.

After a failed bid to lure him to a later meeting, his house was shot at three times, police said.

On Wednesday, Nazir was found guilty of conspiracy to murder and possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence, following a trial at Birmingham Crown Court.

He was also found guilty of perverting the course of justice and illegally importing firearms.

Aslam was cleared of a firearms offence, but on Monday was found guilty of conspiracy to murder.

They are due to be sentenced at the same court on 9 August.

West Midlands Police said it worked with Derbyshire Police on the case, because it was investigating them over firearms importation.

It said detectives were able to piece together their involvement through their phones, CCTV and financial investigations.

Correction 13 June: This article originally reported that Aslam and Nazir had threatened their target with a gun which jammed, allowing him to escape and that they had shot at his house after failing to lure him out again. They did not themselves carry out these acts so we have amended our story to make that clear.
