On-demand bus service expanded due to popularity

An on-demand bus service in Worcestershire has expanded because of growing popularity.
The service, launched last year in the Malvern Hills district, provides a service based on demand rather than using fixed routes and timetables.
The buses offer a service for areas including Upton upon Severn, Kempsey, Hanley Swan, Hanley Castle, Longdon, Bushley and Welland.
A similar service was piloted in Bromsgrove in 2021 which, according to Worcestershire County Council, "wildly exceeded expectations".
'Many more journeys'
It is now possible to travel to local places, such as Malvern Hospital, Malvern Railway Station and Malvern Retail Park.
Passengers can also travel further afield, to places like Worcestershire Parkway Station, Worcester Countryside Centre and Tewkesbury town centre.
The service is bookable through an app or sometimes a telephone call.
Passengers, who share journeys, are then collected quickly and within a few metres of their location.
Councillor Mike Rouse, cabinet member for highways and transport at Worcestershire County Council, said: "We launched the on-demand service in Malvern in July last year and the number of users has been steadily growing since.
“We’re expanding this service to cover many more journeys across the district and beyond."
'Reduce social isolation'
Councillor Tom Wells, leader of Malvern Hills District Council, said the service provides a lifeline for people.
"[They include those] who need assistance with accessing health services, important appointments, and town centres for shopping and entertainment," he said.
"Not only this, but it is a great way of reducing social isolation for people living in rural areas, as well as offering a sustainable travel solution."
The buses run from 07:00 to 19:00 GMT, Monday to Saturday.
There’s a flat fare of £2.50 for journeys per person, with additional passengers paying £1.25.
