Library to close to upgrade energy efficiency
- Published
Devizes Library will close for more than three weeks so new energy efficient equipment can be installed
From 1 July, the building will close and air source heat pumps will be brought in to replace the boilers and water heaters.
It is hoped it will decrease the library's carbon emissions.
The work is part of Wiltshire Council's work to be carbon neutral by 2030.
The council said to date, it is so far using 2,250 tonnes less in carbon emissions, at a financial saving of £780,000 a year.
Anyone with books out from Devizes Library will be able to drop them off after the work is completed and the letterbox will be sealed - but can return them to any other Wiltshire Library if they need.
What are heat pumps?
Heat pumps run on electricity instead of gas.
They warm buildings by absorbing heat from the air, ground, or water.
Air-source pumps, for example, suck in outdoor air and pass it over tubes containing refrigerant fluids to produce heat.
A ground source heat pump is more efficient than an air source heat pump but less commonly used, as it needs a deep bore hole, or a horizontal system dug into the ground over a large area.
