The council said a "major upgrade" was needed at the junction

Roadworks to upgrade a major traffic junction in Derby are set to last more than four months.
Work starts at the Five Lamps junction on Monday and will include improved traffic signals, a refurbishment of historic railings and the resurfacing of Duffield Road.
Derby City Council said the improvements would combine three separate projects between Five Lamps and St Alkmund's Way to minimise disruption.
The scheme is also expected to deliver improved bus efficiency, the council added.

There will be three phases to the project
During the works, a number of road closures will be in place at various points until December 2025. These include:
The outbound leg of Kedleston Road and the right turn on to Duffield Road will be closed for five weeks from September 1 to October 3. The diversion will be via Duffield Road, Broadway, and Kedleston Road.
The outbound leg of Duffield Road and the inbound leg of Kedleston Road will be closed for nine weeks from October 6 to December 5. The diversion route will be Kedleston Road, Broadway, and Duffield Road, with a one-way system in place.
The final closure will see the right turn from Garden Street to Duffield Road closed, while all inbound and outbound movements will be maintained. This will be in place from December 5 to December 19.

The roadworks are expected to last until December 2025
The council said the dates of the road closures were subject to change as the project progresses.
Throughout the process, a route will be in place for pedestrians, with temporary crossings provided.
There will also be temporary signals at the junction of Broadway and Kedleston Road.
Councillor Carmel Swan, cabinet member for transport, said: "We know that the Five Lamps junction has been a problem area in the past, and now we're taking steps to improve it.
"The current signals are near the end of their life, and no improvements have been made to this junction for many years.
"This major upgrade for Darley [ward] will improve bus efficiency and traffic flow through smart signal technology, which also reduces our energy cost and carbon emissions."
The works are funded by the Bus Service Improvement Plan , externalfunding, with additional support from the East Midlands Combined County Authority, external.
