Potholes in Bradford will be repaired using the money saved from the government's decision to scrap the northern leg of HS2.

Cutler Heights Lane, Town Gate in Wyke and Belle View in Ilkley are among the roads to benefit from the works, West Yorkshire Combined Authority said.

The Keighley and Shipley constituencies will also get thousands of pounds to help repair unadopted roads.

The Department for Transport said local authorities would be required to publish a two-year plan detailing exactly which local roads will benefit.

'Higher priority'

The money to fix potholes is being distributed to local authorities following the government's decision to scrap the HS2 rail line from Birmingham to Manchester.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak revealed some of the money that would have been used to fund the multibillion pound project would instead go towards routine road repairs – which he argued was priority for the electorate.

The government said councils will need to publish lists of roads that will get the cash, as well as regular updates for residents, starting from June.

Failure to do so could lead to future funding for roadworks being withheld, the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) said.

West Yorkshire Combined Authority, which is distributing the cash locally, previously published its list of the first roads to be repaired.

Barkerend Road has been allocated £70,000 for resurfacing, Cutler Heights Lane will have £170,000 spent on it, and Wheathead Lane, Keighley, will benefit from repairs worth £48,000.

Other roads on the list include Granby Lane, Keighley; New Close Road, Nab Wood; Brantcliffe Way, Baildon; Back Grangefield Avenue, Burley and Reservoir Road, Stanbury.

Funds will also be allocated to whole constituencies to resurface or patch up their roads.

A Department for Transport spokesperson said: “Councils in Yorkshire and the Humber have already been paid over £14m to get on with the work and deliver improvements, with another £14m following in this financial year.

“As a condition of this funding, and to make sure money is being spent on pothole repairs, local authorities are required to publish a two-year plan detailing exactly which local roads will benefit."
