Rail and tram works to cause summer disruption

Commuters are urged to check before they travel as maintenance works at a major rail and tram station are set to cause disruption.
Some platforms at Manchester Piccadilly station will be temporarily shut from Saturday as engineers install new netting to the station’s glass roof.
The work will be done in six stages until October to reduce disruption.
Kara Wood, acting route strategy director for Network Rail's North West route, said: “While some platforms will be closed as we install new netting, the majority of the station will be unaffected.”
Bus replacement services will also be in operation between the station and Piccadilly Gardens between 22 June and 9 July, as no trams will run between the stops due to track replacement work.
London Road will also be shut southbound between Store Street and Fairfield Street, with signed diversions in place.
Closures schedule
The current netting at Piccadilly station, which was installed 25 years ago, is showing “some signs of wear and tear”, a Network Rail representative said.
Engineers will use raised platforms and rope systems to gain access to the roof and install the new netting.
It is expected that platforms 11 and 12 will be closed from 15 June to 6 July, while platforms 9 and 10 will be shut from 6 July to 27 July.
