Children join finale of Olympic inspired project

More than 700 school children and teachers have been celebrating at an event inspired by the Olympics in Coventry.
A total of 63 schools were involved in the Flame of Friendship finale at the University of Warwick, which included a dance choreographed by the Royal Opera House.
A competition to design an Olympic-style torch for the event attracted more than 2,000 entries and the winning design was then created by students from Rugby College.
The concept of the project was to celebrate friendship, sports and teamwork.
The Flame of Friendship project was led by Earlsdon Primary School and supported by the Warwick Institute of Engagement on behalf of the University of Warwick.
Kerry Baker, assistant director at the Warwick Institute of Engagement, said it had been a joy to see it all come together.
“This project has all been about sharing the spirit of the Olympics: International relationships, and sharing culture and ideas, and coming together in a wonderful display of regional collaboration,” she said.
The Flame of Friendship torch travelled to dozens of schools in the area, beginning its journey at Coventry Cathedral and finishing at the university campus.
Rebecca Bollands, who is the headteacher of Earlsdon Primary School and led the project, said: “It feels wonderful to see the project come to an end.
“It’s brilliant to see all the schools, the Royal Opera House, and the steel band join us for the final day.”
The event was live streamed for those who were unable to attend in person, and a recording of the parade and closing ceremony will be made available as a keepsake.
