New pictures reveal what is planned for a library's future ahead of a £1.3m revamp of the building.

Work begins on 1 July to transform Burton Library so it provides a better space for enjoying books and other social and learning activities.

Staffordshire County Council said the site's ground floor would be made into a "vibrant, multi-purpose, accessible and inclusive space".

The authority added that following people's feedback, the premises would include an area to be used by a range of groups; a children's area with sensory equipment; and two quiet areas for adults and teenagers.

“This is an exciting project for Burton Library and is much anticipated by everyone who uses it and our team there," said Catherine Mann, the council's assistant director for culture, rural and safer communities.

She said: "We’re confident [the images] reflect people’s feedback that has helped us to shape the library vision."

A sensory room with interactive elements is also planned

The new "flexible space for events and activities" would be able to seat 30 people and have an interactive digital display screen to show films and live-stream programmes.

The local authority added library users said they wanted spaces for cultural enrichment, a place for creativity, learning and socialising and better digital access.

The library will close from 1 July to 6 July and a temporary library will be run in the former cafe space from 8 July while the refurbishment takes place.
