An 11-year-old schoolboy has been airlifted to hospital after being hit by a car in Herefordshire.

The crash happened at the junction of the A44 and Winslow Road in Bromyard at approximately 08:30 GMT on Monday.

He suffered serious injuries which are not believed to be life-threatening, according to West Mercia Police.

Queen Elizabeth High School in Bromyard confirmed that the victim was a Year 7 pupil at the school and thanked everyone involved in caring for him.

Martin Farmer, the executive head teacher and CEO of the Three Counties Academy Trust, said the pupil was hit on the A44 "at the site of a crossing".

"A local trained paramedic was on the scene immediately along with other members of the public and school staff to attend to the young person, who had received a number of injuries," he added.

Police and paramedics then attended and took over, Mr Farmer said, and the decision was then made to transfer the pupil to hospital via air ambulance.

"The school would like to thank all those involved for their kindness, care and attention and we wish the young person and their family a speedy recovery," Mr Farmer added.

He said the school took road safety seriously and added teachers used an assembly on Monday to reminded pupils about the dangers.

The boy was airlifted to Birmingham Children's Hospital for further treatment, West Midlands Ambulance Service said.

A spokesperson for West Mercia Police said: "We are currently on scene of a collision between a car and a pedestrian on Winslow Road in Bromyard, Herefordshire.
