A new offer has been made to school leaders in Jersey to end a dispute over pay and conditions.

The offer from the States Employment Board includes a 7.9% pay rise, backdated to 2021, and a commitment to review the workload and terms of school leaders by October 2024.

The National Association of Head Teachers (NAHT) said it welcomed the offer and would put it to its members for a vote later.

Two days of strikes by teachers are taking place in Jersey on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The offer from the States Employment Board also included school leaders being given an additional Education Reform Allowance worth about 2.5%, the NAHT said.

Head teachers would also receive a further one-off allowance for next year "if joint work between the union and the government to address changes to school leaders’ roles over the years and the impact of the Education Reform Programme has not been completed by 30 October 2024", it added.

The industrial action was called by the National Education Union, which also has strikes planned for the 14, 15 and 16 November.

It follows failed negotiations over the 7.9% pay offer.

Carl Howarth, president of the NAHT, said the union "recognised the need for continued and constructive dialogue, and we are pleased that through this we have reached a credible proposal which we can positively put to members".
