Alastair Watson has been chosen as Labour's candidate for police, fire and crime commissioner in Staffordshire

The Labour Party has chosen its candidate for the upcoming Staffordshire police, fire and crime commissioner election.

Alastair Watson will go up against Conservative incumbent Ben Adams in May.

Other parties have yet to declare their candidates.

Mr Watson is currently a councillor in Stoke-on-Trent, where he is the cabinet member responsible for finance.

He said he was delighted to have been chosen and his party would give police the powers they need to deal with crime.

“I believe we should be adopting a prevention-first approach, and not just dealing with crime when there is a victim,” he said.

“I’m standing to deliver a long-term plan, to fix the system, to back our police and to make our streets safe again.”
