Repair work is set to take place next month to provide a "long-term" fix of a sewer pipe under a main road which burst earlier this week.

The Southern Water sewer main burst beneath the A2030 Eastern Road in Portsmouth, initially closing the road both ways between Tangier Road and Burrfields Road.

The utility company said two northbound and one southbound lane had since reopened but further repair work would take place in October.

More than 1,000m of pipe from Farlington roundabout to beyond Anchorage Road was relined by the company last year after frequent sewer bursts, leaks and flooding.

Southern Water said a diversion remained in place for the footpath on Thursday as it was close to the immediate location of the latest burst.

"We are now preparing for the repair of the rising main and lining of the sewer pipe to provide a long-term solution.

"This will give us time to order necessary equipment for the replacement and prepare costings," it added.

One southbound lane and the footpath will be closed while the work is carried out in October.
