A 14-year-old boy was left with "potentially life-changing injuries" after a stabbing near a Merseyside park, police have said.

It happened at about 22:15 BST on Monday on Pennine Drive near Gaskell Park in St Helens.

The boy was stabbed repeatedly by two males who then fled, Merseyside Police said.

The victim was taken to hospital where he remains in a serious but stable condition.

The force said inquiries were continuing and officers are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.

Det Insp Jimmy Rotheram said: "Any incident of knife crime is by its nature extremely serious, but the age of the victim last night and his injuries are particularly hard to comprehend.

"We are absolutely determined to find the suspects as soon as possible and remove them from the community.

"At this stage we do not know why the victim was targeted, so people need to start talking.

"Staying silent when you hold information on this incident should not be an option, so do the right thing and come forward".
