A man who attempted to murder a woman with a hammer has been jailed for 19 years.

Douglas Thomson, of Wellington Road in Lindholme, Doncaster, struck her on the back of the head, climbed on top of her while attacking her with the hammer and then pressed down on her throat and eyes.

The 60-year-old, who also stabbed himself during the incident, had denied attempted murder but was found guilty following a trial at Sheffield Crown Court and was jailed on 24 October.

Det Con Alexandra Owen said the victim had been left with "horrific" physical injuries and long-lasting psychological harm.

"There is absolutely no justification for this kind of violence and I am pleased a lengthy custodial sentence has been served," she said.

Three witnesses had intervened in the attack, which took place in March 2024, with two of them barricading Thomson into a room until police arrived.

Det Con Owen thanked them for playing a "pivotal role" in reducing the potential harm to the woman during a set of "traumatic" circumstances.

"They will be presented with the High Sheriff's Award for their immense courage, bravery and strength of character and it is no less than they deserve," Det Con Owen added.
