A supermarket chain's oldest worker said he has no plans to retire despite turning 90.

Ron Ellis began working at Asda's Trafford Park store in Manchester in 2006, and has become a firm favourite with customers.

Colleagues surprised Ron with gifts for his milestone birthday last month.

"That day will remain firmly in my memory for the rest of my days," he said.

Ron, a widower who previously worked as an estimator for a steelworks firm, has been greeting customers and helping at checkouts with Asda for the past 18 years.

"My colleagues here are brilliant, fantastic, and we get on so well," he said.

Colleague Rachel Smith said the 90-year-old was a "true gentleman" who staff thought of as a "family member".

Ron was also praised for regular kind acts, such as paying for a customer's shopping after they left their bank card at home.

"I love having a chat with the customers, we talk about all sorts, including football," he said.

"I'm a big Man City fan while many of the customers and colleagues here support United.

"It's all good humoured though, as we're a very friendly store here."

An Asda spokesman said customers had praised Ron for "always making them feel welcome", and for being a "great guy who keep everybody happy".
