Costume jewellery that was stolen from a family home has been fished out of a river by police and handed back to their owner.

Hertfordshire Police said necklaces, earrings and watches were taken from a home in St Albans, between 15:30 and 23:45 GMT on Saturday.

It said a member of the public saw a man dropping the items, kept in a box, into the River Ver, in Verulamium Park, on Sunday morning.

Members of its Safer neighbourhood team were able to recover the items and return them.
