John Bain, 60, was discovered at an address in Willingale Road, Loughton, Essex, at about 22:20 BST on Wednesday, after officers were called to reports of a serious assault.
His family have paid tribute to “beautiful and kind-hearted soul” who will be "sadly missed by us all".

Mr Bain was taken to hospital following the assault, but died on Thursday, said Essex Police.
In a statement, his family said: “Our brother, John, will be remembered by us all as a beautiful and kind-hearted soul.
“He was known as Johnny to his friends and family. He will be sadly missed by us all.
“Fly high Johnny, we love you.”
