Police are trying to locate the driver of a car which hit level crossing barriers during a pursuit in East Sussex.

A blue Alfa Romeo made off from the scene without stopping following the incident at Berwick station shortly after 11:30 BST on Thursday.

Southern Railway said lines between Lewes and Eastbourne have reopened following the incident, in which a train later struck one of the two damaged barriers.

But it warned that services running between the stations may be cancelled or severely delayed. The road either side of Berwick station remains closed.

Network Rail said a car had driven through the crossing barriers on Thursday morning.

"A train then struck one of the two damaged barriers which had been knocked on to the track," a spokesperson said.

No-one on board the train was injured, according the the rail operator.

Sussex Police said the car "was being pursued northbound by police as it was believed to be stolen and on cloned plates".

East Sussex Highways said there was an "emergency road closure" in place on Station Road, Berwick.

Sussex Police are appealing for anyone with information about the incident to come forward.
