Hunt for name for new town square

Residents in a town are being encouraged to pitch ideas for the name of a new square.
The public space is set to open in Stretford, Greater Manchester, in spring 2025 as part of a revamp of the shopping area.
Trafford Council and property developer Bruntwood want residents to suggest a name for the square that will connect King Street and Pinnington Lane.
The competition was officially launched at an event on Saturday.
Opened in 1969, the then Stretford Arndale was one of the biggest indoor malls at the time.
Legendary American boxer Muhammad Ali was swamped by fans when he visited as part of a nationwide tour in 1971 to promote the Ovaltine drink.
'Inspire'
Officials have asked for ideas highlighting the town’s heritage, culture and community, which can be submitted online, external or at a special postbox in the SQ Stretford community hub.
Suggestions will be whittled down to a shortlist of three before members of the public can vote on their favourite name between 1-16 June.
The selected name of the new public square is expected to be announced on 6 July.
James Tootle, head of retail and leisure at Bruntwood, said: “The new public square will be at the heart of Stretford town centre, and who better to name it than the local community.”
He said the new square will provide “a space for everybody in the Stretford community and our vision is that it will inspire even more great collaborations”.
