Plans to replace a burnt down night club have been put forward to Hastings Borough Council.

Developers hope to build a four-storey complex in Hastings town centre, consisting of 14 apartments, six holiday lets and four shops.

The Grade II listed building in George Street, along with the amusement arcade below it, were badly damaged by fire at the start of the year.

Oasis Developments Hastings Ltd, which has submitted the plans, said the proposed structure would "enhance the character of George Street".

The site formerly known as Saturdays nightclub burnt down in January and Sussex Police said the blaze was being treated as deliberate.

Although most of the site has already been cleared, the developer has applied to demolish most of 41, George Street, but said the building’s facade would be retained.

In documents submitted as part of the application, a spokesperson said the project would "take a much-maligned and unattractive building" and transform it into "a high quality piece of architecture".

They said they had used building forms and materials intended to allow the building to "seamlessly blend into its context".
