South West Water's largest reservoirs are 40% more full than in March 2023, the utility has reported.

The water company said that Roadford Reservoir in Devon was currently completely full, whereas this time last year it was at 63% of capacity.

It said that Colliford Reservoir was presently at 96% after being 55% full in March 2023.

Provisional Met Office figures show it has been the eighth wettest winter on record for the UK overall.

David Harris, South West Water’s drought and resilience director, said that there was "no doubt that the wettest February on record has helped reservoir levels".

But he added: "Our interventions and the hard work of our customers to reduce their water usage has combined to recharge our biggest reservoirs ahead of the spring and summer months.”

South West Water said it has spent £125m to increase resources in Devon and Cornwall.

Last year the water firm announced its aim to ensure that by 1 April 2024 both reservoirs would reach 90% storage.

South West Water provides water and sewerage services to Devon and Cornwall, plus small parts of Dorset and Somerset.
